Our headline guest will be the truly impressive

Laura Collins & her Band

George Barris on Bass, Matt Newman on guitar, Earl Pollard on drum

Laura Collins cut her teeth in the late 80s Wellington folk scene playing with Robbie Duncan and Alan Quinn, then went the electric route with rock/blues band Wild Blue in the 90s. A later duo with guitar player Dave Murphy was the beginning of her foray into the country- blues and alt-country genre where she has found her style and voice. She has spent the last eight years working in this territory with her previous band Urban Ruby, particularly alongside New Zealand based American guitarist Matthew Newman. In 2002 she began writing more seriously and penned most of her first album. She furthered her long time association with Robbie Duncan as he then engineered, mixed and mastered her first album, One Feather at a Time (2003) at Braeburn Recording Studio.

Always having been ‘just a singer’ eventually became too much of an impediment to getting out there and playing her own songs, so she returned home from a pilgrimage to Louisiana and Austin, Texas with a Taylor acoustic guitar and has been making friends with her ever since. The songs on Cast a Line (released in 2006), were written on her return from that trip. Laura says, ‘I’m interested in songs that have a true emotional vulnerability, and in telling stories that delve into both the dark and the lighter sides of human nature.’ The tone of Cast a line ranges from a confessional intimacy to the exuberant celebration of being alive.

For the last four years Laura has produced the Wellington-based South of the Divide events, which celebrate local musicians whose roots lie in the southern states of America. Laura’s musical influences are very much from that neck of the woods, with artists such as Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, Stacey Earle, Emmy-Lou Harris and Alison Krauss among her favourites.

The May Music Marathon
Such a great event and it wouldn't have happened without lots of help from all sorts of people. Below is a thank you to them from Anje, who along with Greg co-ordinated the whole project. Not only does Anje drum like a demon but she has a wonderful way with bits of cloth – the reason the stages looked so cool. The Committee thanks you both.

The marathon is done and dusted for another year! Wow what a great 12 hours, the atmosphere was fantastic, the entertainment was exceptional and the people that made it happen are well deserving of a giant pat on the back! The reports back from the spectators, musicians and club members alike are incredibly positive and everyone is already talking about next year's Music Marathon. As always these sorts of events would never happen without the unflinching support of our club members and the wider local community. We would like to take this opportunity to give heartfelt thanks to those people.

The KLMC would like to specially thank:

SOUNDSGOOD

Our sound team ‘Sounds Good’ with Ross and Carylann at the helm as always did a splendid job while contributing musically as well, they really ‘pushed the boat out’ for us breaking out the heavy artillery, gear wise, to ensure the sound was great. This includes their team: Mark, Kieran, Ramon, Tony, Danilo, Wayne, and Clint.

PUREBREAD

Robert Glensor’s business ‘Purebread’ made huge contributions including all the sausages and bread for the BBQ, the lovely drum kit we all got the pleasure of listening to (and playing) and prizes for the raffle of product from his organic range of goods.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR GRAPHICS

Tim’s printing and graphics business were most gracious, with help from Danilo, in printing all the posters, complimentary tickets and programmes for our event that Gary had designed.

KAPITI OBSERVER

Randall Walker was the man of the moment here, reporter and photographer extraordinaire really helped with the marketing of the Marathon with fantastic pre event articles, photos and programme publishing and then followed up the event with the most spectacular two page spread of action shots we have ever had… Thankyou!

KINGDOM MUSIC

The whole team at Kingdom have been really supportive as usual; supplying our musos with gift vouchers and giving us a great discount on the raffle prizes including a spanking new and very nice acoustic guitar and multiple ukuleles.

THE KAPITI NEWS

The great article from Marnie Hunter really captured the spirit of the KLMC, promoting the club and the other great events we hold, with a cool photo of ‘The swinging Cats’ strutting their stuff.

THE BBQ AND RAFFLE TEAMS

Marnie, Dave, Nikki, Kevin, Shelley, Charley, Richard… I hope we have everyone here you were great!

THE WAIKANAE HOTEL

Thanks to Michael and all the staff who tirelessly helped make this event a success, providing vouchers for food and drinks to the musos, helpers and organisers who all donated their time and talent.

LEVANA TEXTILES LEVIN

These guys always come to the party and donate fabric to the stage design team to dress up the room in true May Music Month style. They always really support local events like this a lot!

MAY MUSIC MONTH NZ

The team at May Music Month central donated heaps of goodies for our gift packs and posters to decorate the venue.

MANUKA MUSIC

Generously contributed a free music lesson voucher for our gift packs.

Of course there are many people who contributed to this event including our own committee and club members, some like Michael who went ‘above and beyond’ the call of duty and tirelessly worked for about two days, Ezra who was a great ‘drum tech/stagehand all day and was still there with Danilo at 2am cleaning up, Gary who did heaps of pre-Marathon fundraising (and is now the resident grovelling expert), Paul who organised all the raffle details, Sylvia who deftly managed the gift packs, Sue who did the wishing well and more… the list goes on including the people who attended countless planning meetings… what can we say, you know who you are!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

A Huge thank you to All the Musicians that participated in the KLMC May Music Marathon

On behalf of KLMC I'd just like to thank you all for a fantastic day!

The reports back from the public, hotel staff and other musos watching were 100% positive and enthusiastic, there was something for everyone and the day went really smoothly, most of the time. There were many highlights for me during the 12hours including the stylely Andrew London, the massive effort that was The Intenders (well done Bos) The Swinging Cats, so cool, Tony Wilson surprised everyone in a 10min slot and left them wanting more... I missed quite a lot too but heard great things about Gallery's drummer! I would have liked to catch Ezra playing with Danilo and Sue... Of course The Daggs was my all time fave, (but of course) and the Carol Bean band got great reviews from the crowd... so did The Blair Allen Set, Matt Hay, Pigskin, Dave Chadwick, Off the Grid, and of course The Plan rocked! All the solo and duo acts really were very smooth and professional and people commented on the really great range of talent from acts like Linzee, Tony and Matthias, Gary and Paul, Caz, Daniel Bohan and of course the popular Tihikura Hohaia. There's just so much great stuff that came out of the day...By the time Groove Assembly got grooving the crowd was ready to dance and enjoy to the end with Suzie! Everyone was fantastic!

Thank you again!
