TONY WILSON
Tony Wilson is an award winning Musician and Songwriter on the cusp of commercial success. Tony was bought up in a musical family in Wellington New Zealand where his Father, Don Wilson (known for his 1976 hit “Big Norm”) nurtured his creative talent. From a young age Tony began to write, record and perform on a regular basis with bands “Miss Conduct”, “Civilian Down!” and later his solo career.
Tony Wilson draws inspiration from such artists as Jeff Buckley, Dave Mathews, Death Cab for Cutie and John Mayer. Tony’s songwriting focuses on experiences, places and events and is written with an ornate sense of imagery.
In February 2009 Tony’s song "Summer Crush - Bottom of the Glass" was judged best overall in the "Visa Muso Challenge" by a panel of judges including the Chairman of the New Zealand Independent Music Association.
"When the Wellington-based singer/songwriter first heard he had won a NZ$5,000 scholarship, he knew exactly what he would do with the prize money. “I’m going to use the funding from Visa Entertainment to record an album” Tony said. "
"Tony, an IT analyst by day and a musician by night, has also been part of heavy metal band, Civilian Down. However, his solo style could not be more different from his heavy metal roots, as Tony cites his influences as John Butler, Dave Matthews Band and Death Cab for a Cutie."
Following this success Tony has recorded his Debut Solo album "Time in Space". The album is a collation of 11 songs written throughout the past few years. It is full of contrasts and metaphors and covers a diverse range of styles and feels whilst keeping the singer\songwriter dynamic. With the help of a talented team of session musicians and a string quartet Tony has bought these songs to life with a full, studio quality sound.
This gig starts with an informal open mic at 4 pm then we host special guest Donna Deans who is on world-wide tour - she’ll tell you about that. One week you'll find Donna singing her originals at a jump-blues gig, the next at a folk gig and then there's the Bluegrass connection. Named the 'New American Queen of Bluegrass' by the Wall St Journal, Rhonda Vincent, cut Donna's song "Destination Life" which made the title track of Rhonda's album released on Rounder Records in Nashville in 2009. The album was nominated for a Grammy January 2010. Come on down. Donna is a classy live act and rising kiwi talent at its best. Her new album will be on sale. Koha entry

Oli Brown
The Ruby Lounge

9:00pm
Barely out of his teens, Oli Brown is being hailed as the great
white hope of British blues, with glowing reviews for his live
and recorded work. Uncut magazine describes his guitarplaying
as a cross between Rory Gallagher and Steve
Cropper.
The Blind Date concert will be at the Ruby Lounge, Bond Street, Wellington, on Sunday, August 22 at 7.30pm, following the AGM.
7:30
This month's concert at the Ruby Lounge is a bit different. It's our annual Blind Date concert, where randomly grouped volunteers get to show what their arranged collaborations have produced in just a month. Blind Date acts are often surprising, sometimes amazing, and always entertaining! (The photo shows "Ruthless" doing their version of I wanna be sedated at last year's Blind Date concert.) So come along to the AGM and stick around for this fun demonstration of creative musical cooperation. Rumour has it that the outgoing committee may also perform a number or two.
We are confident that all the Blind Date acts will be good, so there's no competition for "Best Act". But just to give participants something to shoot for, there are three awards, with appropriate trophies, up for grabs:
The Linda Sorenson Chocolate Fish Award for the best original song
The Golden Plectrum Award for the best instrumental break
The Bob Cooper-Grundy Award for the best dressed band.
The Blind Date concert will be at the Ruby Lounge, Bond Street, Wellington, on Sunday, August 22 at 7.30pm, following the AGM.

What do a Kiwi and a Caribbean have in common? A passion for syncopated rhythms, evocative tunes and uncompromised lyrics. An unusual mix for sure, but that’s what Latin America is all about - a melting pot of races and cultures that generates the Latin passion for exuberant self-expression through music.

A one-off, intimate Sunday evening performance with Paul Ubana Jones.at
Downstage, Wellington
$35
7pm
Born in London to a Yorkshire mother and a Nigerian father, Paul Ubana Jones was playing guitar by the age of 11, beginning a three decade career that would see him crossing continents and recording seven albums of mostly original songs.
After graduating from a London music college, where he studied guitar and cello, Paul began to forge the solo acoustic style that he has stuck to and developed over the years. In the late seventies, Paul based himself in Provence, Southern France, and toured all over Europe and North Africa, as well as venturing extensively into Canada and the US.
In the late eighties Paul and his family moved to New Zealand, which is still their permanent home. He has continued to perform internationally, to growing acclaim. Concert performances include opening for the likes of Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo’, Tuck and Patti, and Crowded House.
Festival appearances include Dublin Blues Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, and Blues at Bridgetown, as well as festivals across Canada and elsewhere.
Paul continues to perform regularly in New Zealand and is well known to Wellington audiences.
“Paul Ubana Jones’ … soulful voice, sprightly guitar agility and enthusiasm made this the most inspired performance of the evening … In any other country he would be a national institution!” -- Simon Sweetman (Reviewing Paul Ubana Jones/Patti Smith/Bob Dylan, Queen’s Wharf Events Centre, September 1998)
“Trying to describe just how good Paul Ubana Jones is, is like trying to define why the Mona Lisa is the most famous painting in the world – words pale in comparison.” -- Evening Post
